Mr Ricky Kumar

BHB (Auck), MBChB (Auck), BDS (Otago), FRACDS (OMS), FRCS (Eng)

Mr Kumar is qualified with degrees in both Medicine and Dentistry.  He received several awards during his studies including University of Otago’s most outstanding student during his dental degree as well as F.G Christensen medal for part I exams for his surgical training.

He did his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgical training in Adelaide from where he completed part II exams with RACDS and was awarded the FRACDS (OMS) fellowship.

He then undertook further 12 months sub-specialty training in Paediatric maxillofacial surgery and corrective jaw surgery as a fellowship at Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. To further his skills and clinical interests, he spent another 12 months as a clinical fellow at the prestigious Oxford University Hospitals in UK. Here he received specialized training in Paediatric maxillofacial surgery and TMJ surgery.

Mr Kumar currently holds appointments as a consultant surgeon at:

  • The Royal Melbourne Hospital
  • Royal Children’s Hospital of Melbourne
  • Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne (Previous Director Surgery for OMS) 

He was instrumental in setting up TMJ surgical services at Monash Health and RMH and performed the first TMJ replacement surgery at Monash, Royal Melbourne and Royal Children’s.

He is involved in the training of future surgeons and holds the following leadership roles:

  • Director of Training for Victorian OMS program: 2024- current 
  • Examiner in the RACDS SST and Foundation examinations: 2022- current
  • Chief examiner for Foundation exam for OMS program of RACDS:2025 – current 
  • Supervisor of training for OMS training at Monash Health and RMH:2018- 2024
  • Director of Paediatric Maxillofacial fellowship at Royal Children’s Hospital: 2025- current 
  • Board member for Board of Studies OMS RACDS: 2023- current

He is also committed to the profession and contributes to the surgical community through the following:

  • Chief organizer of yearly charity oral and maxillofacial operating missions to Fiji: 2012- 2020
  • Previous Victorian Councillor for the ANZAOMS federal Board: 2017 – 2023
  • Yearly charity operating missions to Kathmandu, Nepal 2024-2026

Mr Kumar practices full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery including dentoalveolar surgery, implantology, oral pathology and facial trauma. 

His sub-specialty interest areas are paediatric maxillofacial surgery, corrective jaw surgery (orthognathic surgery) and TMJ surgery including joint replacements.
